What are impingement and entrainment?

With all the recent attention placed on EPA Clean Water Act Section 316(b) compliance it can be easy to lose sight of the objective. The purpose of all of this regulation is to reduce the amount of fish kill caused by impingement and entrainment.

Impingement occurs when fish and other aquatic life are trapped against cooling water intake screens.

Entrainment occurs when aquatic organisms, eggs and larvae are drawn into a cooling system, through the heat exchanger, and then pumped back out.

The new EPA measures that require reducing impingement mortality by 80 to 95 percent. Gunderboom's MLES™ provides plant managers a cost-effective, ecologically sound and aesthetically pleasing alternative to cooling tower technology.
